If you’ve just upgraded from the old Skype version (Ubuntu repository) to version 4.0, you may get a “Disk I/O error” when you try to login. To fix it, you just have to type the following command into a terminal (do not use sudo!).
~$ rm .Skype/shared.xml
That’s it!

hmm, interesting. Here none of them helped. the folder .Skype is ok, even with deleting it, nothing changed.
No other process is using skype files, …or at least “lsof | grep .Skype” didn’t show anything.
Interesting thing is that when I write a wrong password, it says, it’s wrong, and when I write the correct one, it has the DISK I/O error. So the programs is able to connect 2 the skype server, but has some problem here.
hmmm.
any ideas?
I’ve got Ubuntu 12.04, using Openbox since the comp is older.
))
when I run skype as a guest user, it worked, so I think really smth was using skype files. Will have a look at it. maybe pulse.
thnx anyway +
Hey, I think it might be some residual stuff from the older version. Make sure you remove/purge all packets related to skype:i386.
That in fact didn’t work for me, I ended up with the same error. However, I did delete the entire .Skype directory
<code?~$ rm -rf .Skype
And that did work for me. Of course I lost some chat logs and a few other things I’m sure, but I suppose I could have backed those up before if they were important.
